How to become a Business Analyst with no IT experience

A beginner-friendly guide to becoming a Business Analyst with no IT experience, including skills, project practice, CV positioning, and first steps.

You do not need to start with deep technical knowledge to move toward Business Analysis. You need to understand how organisations solve problems, how stakeholders communicate needs, and how requirements become useful work for delivery teams.

Start with the role

A Business Analyst helps clarify business problems, gather requirements, map processes, support decisions, and make sure delivery teams understand what needs to be built or improved.

Build the core skills

  • Requirements gathering and documentation.
  • Stakeholder communication.
  • Process mapping and problem analysis.
  • Basic understanding of software delivery and agile ways of working.
  • Clear written communication for CVs, LinkedIn, and interviews.

Use transferable experience

Customer service, operations, admin, finance, healthcare, retail, teaching, project coordination, and support roles can all contain useful BA evidence. The key is learning how to describe that experience using BA language.

Practise with realistic scenarios

Reading about Business Analysis is not enough. You need to practise stakeholder conversations, requirements writing, acceptance criteria, process mapping, and explaining your decisions.
