Requirements

Requirements gathering explained for new Business Analysts

A simple guide to requirements gathering for beginner Business Analysts, including stakeholders, questions, and documentation.

Requirements gathering is one of the most important Business Analysis skills. It is the process of understanding what stakeholders need, why they need it, and how that need should be documented for delivery.

Start with the problem

Before writing requirements, understand the problem, the business goal, the people involved, and the outcome the organisation wants.

Ask better questions

Good Business Analysts ask clear, open questions. They listen for confusion, assumptions, risks, and missing details.

Document clearly

Requirements should be specific enough for delivery teams to understand but clear enough for business stakeholders to review.

Validate what you heard

Do not assume everyone means the same thing. Confirm requirements, clarify gaps, and keep stakeholders aligned.

Practise the skill

The best way to improve is to practise with realistic scenarios, sample stakeholders, process maps, and documentation tasks.
